It can be good to look at what the opposition is saying. This highlights not just the $ issue but an important gut level feeling issue concerning the fear of losing personal access to care – waiting longer. I don’t believe all this and I know how long I already have to wait – unless it is urgent. But, being prepared to respond to allegations is important – especially when they are at the gut level. As we know – facts don’t matter to many on most issues. Communication on values is more effective. The biggest barrier to universal access in this country is the attitude that “I do not want those undeserving bastards to get health care at my expense”. That is a mindset that is all too common and has been grown via psychological marketing methodologies developed over the last several decades by extreme right-wing “think tanks”. It has been aimed primarily at the working poor to divert blame from the rich & corporations onto their neighbors. Changing to a caring, compassionate view for those will be hard, but it can happen. It needs to become personal and all need to see it as close to home. What happened in places like Minnesota concerning same-sex marriage law proves it can be done. But, facts did not create that change.
