Letter: Single-payer health care and Albert Lea | Albert Lea Tribune
Insurance does not belong between me and my doctor. Health care is not a privilege. It is, in most modern countries, a right. The high cost is driven by the profit motive and by the lobbying/campaign funding from corporations. There is a difference between a mandate that I have insurance and a mandate that I have a universal right to basic health care. My access to basic health care should be the same as my right to call the police, call the fire department, send my kids to public school or expect the armed forces to protect the country. Pretend we never created insurance for basic health care and begin to imagine a system that actually works.
